A repotting sickle is used to remove bonsai trees from pots when they become pot bound. When growing bonsai the artist will allow the tree to grow in the same pot for years in this time the tree will sendout new roots that explore the entire container. These roots will continue to grow and ramify which can hold the tree in the pot making it difficult to remove when it is time to repot the tree. The Hounen sickle is speciffically designed to cut roots that are bound to the container wall, by running and sawing the sickle along the edge of the pot one can remove these roots and allow for an easy extraction of the tree from the pot.
