Species profile and care guide:

The Firethorn Genus of evergreen shrubs are native to Asia but are a common hedge plant in South Africa. The plants produce small white flowers in spring which turn into red or orange berries depending on the species. All species have large sharp thorns. Pyracanthas make excellent bonsais thanks to their growth structure and beautiful berries which contrast well with the dark green foliage.

Firethorns are very hardy species that are beginner friendly and can tolerate many conditions. We recommend protecting this species during winter if frost and freezing temperatures are common. A sunny outdoor location is preferred for best results but this species can be grown indoors on a sunny windowsill however the growth on an indoor plant will not be as vigorous.

Water a Pyracantha as you would most Bonsai, do not let the root mass dry out completely but ensure that the tree is planted in a well-draining soil a standard bonsai mix will suffice. Repotting can be done in late winter/ early spring for the best results.

Pruning this species is easy but one should take care around the thorns to prevent injury. Hard prune or trim your tree in late winter/ early spring. You can continue to trim or prune the plant after spring once the new growth has hardened off. Trim to keep the specimen in shape or prune to develop better structure. Pyracanthas respond well to pruning and will bud-back frequently.
