Species profile and care guide:

Senegalia mellifera, Acacia mellifera common name Black Thorn is a common indigenous bushveld thorn tree with black hooked thorns. Not all Senegalia/Acacia trees are suitable for Bonsai however most of the hook thorn varieties are and make for some exceptional specimens. The species is fantastic for Bonsai because it is prune tolerant, has small twice compounded leaves and a fantastic flaky, corky bark. The trunk thickens quickly creating great taper and form in a short amount of time.

As Bonsai it is best to place your tree in full sunlight but be cautious with this species during the winter months. The Black thorn is a deciduous tree however take note that if winter temperatures drop below freezing the trees health will suffer. We recommend over-wintering this species in a greenhouse or tunnel however if you do not have access to such facilities you can bring the tree in at night and return it to its growing location in the morning.

The Black monkey thorn will begin to drop its leaves in autumn however we recommend reducing your watering towards late autumn to encourage the tree to go dormant for the winter period. In nature this will occur naturally, being a common species you are bound to see large specimens growing in your area. Monitor these large specimens for seasonal changes this will give you a great benchmark to apply to your trees.

Watering this species is very easy due to its visual responses to over watering, when the species is under water stress the tree will droop and close its leaves. Standard Bonsai watering practice applies do not allow the tree to become water-logged but do not allow the tree to dry out completely in the summer months. A rich but well-draining soil is essential for long term health and vigorous growth. During winter the tree does not require watering if it is in its dormant stage, please note that some more tropical areas or areas that do not get very cold in winter this might not be the case. Always monitor your trees and respond accordingly. Repotting can be done in late winter/early spring when buds start to swell.

Pruning this species is easy and great structure with dense foliage can be achieved, be cautious as the thorns on these trees are nasty and can cause injury. Wiring thorn trees is not easy and it can be time consuming as a result of the thorns.
