Species profile and care guide:

The Common Privet is a vigorous, flowering and fruiting small tree with small reducible leaves, it forms woody trunks with textured bark. Privets are not an indigenous species and can be invasive, be responsible by not spreading its seeds or planting it in the garden. Leave your Privet in a pot to prevent it from spreading.

This Species is hardy and very easy to care for, it tolerates a wide range of temperatures but it is not frost tolerant. Some Privet species can drop their leaves in colder conditions despite the majority of species being evergreen.

As Bonsai water a Privet well but do not allow the tree to become water logged, a rich but well-draining soil is ideal. Repotting can be done in late winter/early spring as with most Bonsai species. These small trees prefer full sun and good circulation.

The production of white tubular flowers begins in spring and continues into summer after flowering small black berries are produced that look fantastic on a mature Bonsai.

Pruning this species is very easy and good branch structure is easily achieved with proper technique, wiring a Privet is easy and essential to maintain good structure. Privets tend to send shoots from around the tree base which can quickly get out of hand, trim these shoots regularly before they can form trunks. The Privet is easy to care for hardy and develops into Bonsai quickly making it a great beginner species.
