Species profile and care guide:

The common Juniper is an extremely popular Bonsai species due to their easy care requirements and beautiful foliage. Junipers are originaly native to Europe,Asia, and North America but the species can be found all over the world due to its popularity as a garden tree.

Junipers make excelent Bonsai and are beginer friendly due to their hardiness, are easily shaped and respond well to proper Bonsai techniques. Juniper Bonsai require direct sunlight making them best suited for growing outdoors all year round. As Bonsai they can tolerate harsh conditions and are frost-tolerant but care should still be taken during extreme winter conditions if frost is present. Cover the tree with a frost cover or move it to a sheltered position to avoid frost.

When watering a Juniper Bonsai standard Bonsai watering techniques should be followed, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. A rich but well-draining soil should be used. Repot your Juniper in late winter/early spring every 2-4 years as with most Bonsai.

Pruning Junipers differs to the pruning of desiduous species, Junipers can tolerate agressive pruning but pinching or plucking new growth is prefered to trimming with scissors as when cut the needles around the cut area can die back and turn brown. This is not harmful to the plant but can look unsitely on Bonsai. Junipers tend to produce ''crotch'' growth betwen branches and ramification, this growth should be removed freqeuently and not allowed to develope to avoid ruining the structure of the tree. Wiring Juniper Bonsai is easy and simple, be gentle with the branches however as they can snap if bent too far without support or raffia.
Junipers produce hard wood that makes beutiful Jin and deadwood accent features, the dead wood can be treated with lime sulpher to turn it white creating great contrast between the live vein and the deadwood.
