Species profile and care guide:

Boxwood are best known for their ability to be pruned into almost any shape making it a great hedging plant, this very feature makes it a fantastic species to be grown as a Bonsai. The plant is very hardy, vigorous and very frost and snow tolerant making it an exceptional beginner species.

Boxwoods grow compact and dense, these evergreen trees will maintain their round to oblong, glossy dark green leaves all year round. The plant does flower, however the flowers are not ‘’showy’’ by nature and are usually yellow. The plant develops slightly textured bark early that can be very pleasing when grown as a Bonsai.

As Bonsai Boxwoods should be grown in rich but well-draining soil, the soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged, standard Bonsai watering techniques apply. Repotting of your Boxwood Bonsai should be done in late winter/early spring for good root growth and vigorous spring growth. As a general rule of thumb for potting Bonsai you should only repot after 2-4 years depending on how vigorous the species is, this will allow the tree to gain strength between repotting.

The plant responds very well to pruning and can be pruned heavily in late August, just before spring, to setup good branch structure before the spring growth. Continue with pruning once the first spring shoots have hardened off, as with most Bonsai, to maintain good structure and shape.

For the best health and growth of your Boxwood Bonsai it should be grown outdoors, the plant tolerates full sun to fairly dense shade, but full sun will produce the most vigorous growth.
